    Ten Miles an Hour

Capt. Hubby and I were bent, heads together, over a shiny new treadmill in the local sports supply store. Our thirty-something acquisition of girth has got us talking about ways to lose it and buying a treadmill is my husband’s latest favorite remedy idea.  As we pointed and chattered about the buttons and knobs, I was testing it out, slowly turning up the speed.

Fear gripped my buns as the rubber mat started turning under my feet.  I took comfort in clutching the bars while multitasking over the digital display.

Suddenly, the chipper voice of Swabbie Two enthusiastically rang out somewhere in the space beyond Hubby’s body,

“Hey! I’m going to go Ten Miles an Hour!!!”

Hubby half turned as we promptly heard a salesman say, “I don’t think you want to do that!!!”

    …Then, bionic slow mo……

Hubby’s body is propelled over the long row of treadmills and suddenly I see….

    Swabbie Two,

    on a treadmill,

    cheerfully turning the knob….

    up…

    to….

    Ten Miles an Hour.

The rest is history and a little…or a lot…of skin under the mill.

Ice packs, ibuprofen, aloe vera gel, a talk with a pharmacist, and lots of TLC later, Two kept telling the Capt. and I that it wasn’t funny, and we agreed, as we were unable to stop laughing every time someone repeated, “Hey! I’m going to go Ten Miles an Hour!”

Aside from the bodily care we have provided for her, we have chosen to let our 11, nearly 12, year old Swabbie take full mental responsibility for her actions. There has been some talk as we have related this story to others, particularly of our and the store’s irresponsibility in the matter. Hubby says that the store salesmen previously informed our bright young thing that she needed an adult present to try any of the equipment.  Were we or the store negligent in our supervision of the child?

Her reasoning for thinking Ten Miles an Hour was an OK speed? That’s what Capt. Hubby says when someone is driving really slow; he or she must be going ten miles an hour. Ugh. We’ll be keeping a closer eye on her for awhile longer.

Some days you have to look extra for reasons to make your eyes smile.

This is great! Sounds just like one of my little monkeys! Thanks for the heads up, we'll be sure to keep an eye on our little ones for a while longer.

Love your site, BTW! This is my first time visiting. I'm rather attached to the sea myself . . . and am also pitifully landlocked!!

OMG. Bet she'll listen next time an adult tells her something. Kids, sometimes they just have to learn the hardway. I'm shaking my head cause mine is a headstrong one. She's now 22 and still dangerous to herself. Was about ready to send her an email telling her how she's abusing her body and should take better care....knowing full well, she's not going to listen. She's in St. Louis, I'm in Ohio; she's a senior going to graduate from college in May. What can you do? But, isn't it still my job as the parent? I wrestle with this on a regular basis.

Thought I'd pop over to tell you JoAnne and Michaels advertised good yarn sales in yesterdays paper. Looks like Michaels might be the better sale. Nudge...<hehe>

I've added some new pictures of recently completed projects (scarfs) plus a few more afghan pictures I found I hadn't added previuosly. Then I was able to add a cool poll feature, right below the photo albums. PLEASE stop back, check it out and vote.

I want to save the time and trouble before your buy that treadmill. My husband had to buy one too. So we got it. It was $1500.00. My son hurt his foot on it. My husband walked on it twice. I tried it but it hurts my back to walk on it, plus it is boring. I would rather walk outside. So we sold it for $350.00 after 1 year of never using it. I have had two in my life and I didn't use either one. You tell yourself yes we will use it, you don't, it just sits there in the way.

That is so funny! I'm glad she's OK & I have a feeling that will be one of those family stories that will last forever with your and yours! As #2 gets older maybe she'll realize it could be even better if she does the telling! :-) I just found your space a few days ago… sorry for the lurking, but glad to leave a comment today!

I love your irrepressible mirth and light candour, it made for very entertaining reading. In a simple but engaging way, you compelled me to read to the very end of that entry, which is what few entries can do masterfully. In this matter however, it seems that parenting never ceases to be a difficult job, it is forever a task which requires equal measures of diligence and compassion. I do hope everything is going well and that your daughter is feeling better. Take care.

Those others who are talking about irresponsibility at the telling are probably the same Americans that I spend a lot of time simultaneously laughing about and shaking my head at. The perception from "outside" the US of litigation makes me suspicious of their motives in questioning responsibility.

Similar to a broker being paid a brokerage for his work. The plaintiff (sew..er) gets paid sew(er)age for their settlement.

These events are meant to be treated as follows:
    1. Say oops
    2. Learn the lesson
    3. Move on

Woah~ Too late, we have already told her it was funny. She's not amused. I'm afraid that my Christmas gift is going to be something shiny with knobs, buttons, a digital readout, handlebars, and a rotating rubber mat. I have these premonitions sometimes.

Jenna~I think she's hoping she won't have a visual example left on her face to use with the story!

Sierra~ After stopping by your space, I see that visiting will even be in the same time zone! Stop by any time you need to warm up; my fire is always going!

LOL! At least she's a kid. My hubby got a tredmill last winter and thought HE would try to go 10 miles an hour! I thought he was going to die! Thank goodness for that little safety belt thing! He quickly pulled it after step 2 of "10 miles per hour".

Just passing through and love your space! Hope you don't mind if I come back.
